Breaking Ground and Breaking Barriers: Bongi Dumisa’s Journey at Rossmin

Aug 2025

At Rossmin, transformation and women empowerment are not just words — they are lived through action. A shining example of this is Bongi Dumisa, our trailblazing Quarry Manager, whose journey reflects our commitment to the South African Mining Charter, Employment Equity Act, and Rossmin’s transformation objectives.

When Bongi was appointed Quarry Manager in April 2022, she became a symbol of progress in a field long dominated by men. Her appointment was not about compliance — it was about recognising her talent, potential, and the value that black women bring to leadership in mining.

With a background in Chemical Engineering, Bongi brought both technical knowledge and fearless ambition to the role. From day one, she embraced the challenges with energy and determination, proving that when women are given the opportunity to lead, they soar.

A Journey of Growth and Grit

Since her appointment, Bongi has consistently invested in her own growth, achieving milestone after milestone in line with the industry’s demands:

  • Competent A Certificate – building a strong foundation in mine health and safety.
  • Assistant Blasting Certificate – equipping her for safe and effective quarry operations.
  • DMRE Blasting Ticket (2025) – a major achievement requiring deep technical expertise, practical experience, and months of dedication.
  • Responsible Person for Explosives Certificate (July 2025) – granting her the legal and technical authority to manage explosives safely and effectively.

Each of these achievements demonstrates Bongi’s grit, resilience, and determination to succeed in one of the most demanding areas of the business.

Empowered Women Empower Others

Bongi’s success is more than personal — it is proof of what’s possible when transformation is taken seriously. Her leadership is already inspiring others, showing women across the industry what can be achieved with opportunity, support, and commitment.

Rossmin remains committed to ensuring that at least 50% of our workforce is women. Bongi’s story proves that this is not just a target — it is a vision already being lived out on the ground.

Looking Ahead

As Bongi continues to grow in her role, she remains passionate about encouraging others to push beyond limitations and strive for excellence. Her story is a powerful reminder that success is not handed over — it is earned through grit, education, and perseverance.

This Women’s Month, we are proud to celebrate Bongi Dumisa. She is breaking barriers, blasting ahead, and paving the way for future generations of women in mining.
